FOUNDATIONS OF CHRISTANITY
There are only two great Gospel fundamentals revealed in the Scriptures.
First: THE GIVING OF THE SON OF GOD FOR THE REDEMPTION OF MAN.
Second: THE GIVING OF THE HOLY GHOST TO MAKE THE GIVING OF HIS SON AVAILABLE AND ATTAINABLE BY MAN.
Scripture for the first fundamental. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
Scriptures for the second fundamental. “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in all Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth” (Acts 1:8). “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all make to drink into one Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:13). “But if the ministration of death, written and engraved in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could steadfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away: How shall not the MINISTRATION OF THE SPIRIT BE RATHER GLORIOUS?” (2 Corinthians 3:7-8).
John Owen makes this comment:
“For when God designed the great and glorious work of recovering fallen man, and of saving sinners to the praise of the glory of his grace, he appointed in his infinite wisdom two great means thereof: The one was, The giving of his Son FOR them; and the other was, The giving of his Spirit TO them” (The Holy Spirit, P-21, Kregel Publications, Grand Rapids Michigan. 1954).
In the body of these two great Gospel truths, an in their institution, we find that the ‘entire and total effort’ of God is shown to both, reveal the glory of God, which is his manifested excellence, and to relieve the souls of men from their sins (Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost (Titus 3:5). Leave off one of these great truths and you render the other ineffective.
